Area Information

Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Snowshoe Mountain Resort
Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort is the perfect resort destination for skiing holidays and winter vacations in West Virginia. At 4,848' elevation, life in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia is a bit different. Forests of snow-laden fir and spruce trees provide a distinctly alpine feel. Snowfall is plentiful and consistent. For what Mother Nature doesn't supply, the resort's powerful snowmaking system, coupled with one of the colder climates in the East, ensures there's always plenty of the white stuff up here. And with 57 slopes and trails and 1,500' vertical drop - more than any other resort in the Southeast - the skiing and riding is as endless as the views.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers excursions that transport you back in time and let you relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Trips to Cass are filled with rich histories of the past, unparalleled views of a vast wilderness area, and close-up encounters with the sights and sounds of original steam-driven locomotives.

Greenbrier River Rail Trail

Greenbrier River Rail Trail
Originally a part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad this 76 mile abandoned grade has been developed into a trail running from North Caldwell to one mile south of Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Uses for the trail include backpacking, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and access to the Greenbrier River for fisherman and canoeists. Camping sites are scattered along the trail. The trail runs adjacent to five state parks and forests beginning at Greenbrier State Forest, near Droop Mountain Battlefield and Watoga State Parks, Seneca State Forest, and ending at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.

Monongahela National Forest

Monongahela National Forest
The Monongahela National Forest was established following passage of the 1911 Weeks Act. This act authorized the purchase of land for long-term watershed protection and natural resource management following massive cutting of the Eastern forests in the late 1800's and at the turn of the century. In 1915, 7,200 acres were acquired to begin the forest, called the Monongahela Purchase, and then on April 28, 1920 it became the Monongahela National Forest. Today the forest is over 909,000 acres in federal ownership in 10 counties in West Virginia, making it the fourth largest National Forest in 20 northeastern states.
